In this episode, Haley and Dustin sit down with Mark Matlock—author, ministry leader, and researcher with the Barna Group—for a thoughtful conversation about wisdom, spiritual formation, and reaching the next generation.
Mark shares insights from his book Faith for the Curious and how his research reveals that many people, especially younger generations, are more open to spiritual conversations than we might think. Together, they discuss how wisdom (especially from Proverbs) shapes our spiritual lives and why evangelism needs to shift from transactional encounters to relational engagement.
They also explore the ongoing mental health crisis and how it’s opening doors for evangelism and deeper discipleship.
Mark will also speak at our upcoming event on Mental Health and the Church and help lead the Urbana Mission Conference at the end of this year—see the links below to learn more.

Bible verses mentioned in this episode
Matthew 5:4 – “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

John 11:21-26, 32-35 -- “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die, and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” … When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept.”

James 4:6 – “But he gives us more grace.”

Bible verses mentioned in this episode

Matthew 15:1-3 — “Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?”

1 Corinthians 14:23 – “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.”

2 Corinthians 4:7 – “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 – “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
